Nature Wars

Fatal auto accidents involving wildlife and humans happen thousands of times a day. Tens of thousands of fish and marine mammals die every year in areas of public recreation. Are we in the midst of a cohabitation crisis? Acclaimed journalist Jim Sterba relays a slightly less than apocalyptic view of the colliding interests of humans and wildlife, which is also the thesis of his new book, "Nature Wars: The Incredible Story of How Wildlife Comebacks Have Turned Backyards Into Battlegrounds." We also speak with John Gary of Oklahoma City Animal Welfare about the efforts to care for pets and wildlife in the aftermath of the devastating tornado that hit his state.

For two decades, the study of wolves has been their life’s work. Between 1990 and 1996, the Dutchers did what many considered impossible -- actually living with a pack of wolves in Idaho’s Sawtooth Wilderness.

For years, the Argentine ant has been known as the most aggressive and widespread invasive ant species in the United States. But researchers at North Carolina State University have confirmed that the insect is challenged by a new and more ambitious rival for territory in urban areas, the Asian Needle Ant, a species that is harmful to people.

A Maryland woman has a Staffordshire terrier (pictured) she can’t keep. Dr. Gary Weitzman of the San Diego Humane Society connects her with Maureen Sosa of the Washington Animal Rescue League, who offers to help find the canine a new home. The human companion of an 11-year-old cat wants to know if the pet is too old for its first vaccination. A Labrador Retriever’s caretaker thinks the dog has strabismus -- a.k.a. crossed eyes -- and seeks confirmation. We also feature BirdNote, a weekly review of avian species. Music: “Road Dogs” by Acoustic Alchemy

Pigs And Ponies In The Wild

Although species decline and habitat loss is widespread throughout the animal kingdom, the feral pig is in the midst of a dramatic population increase and territory expansion. Once considered a regional phenomenon, the destructive mammal is becoming commonplace across much of the nation, leaving billions of dollars of damage in its wake. There are an estimated 5 million wild hogs in the United States, and more than half of them can be found in Texas, where Dr. Billy Higginbotham, a wildlife specialist at Texas A&M University is a key figure among scientists working to control the animal in the state. Higginbotham tells us about this herculean effort. Meanwhile, wild ponies have become a popular attraction at a state park in southwest Virginia and we find out why from Beverley Amsler of Radio IQ.

Journey North is a novel approach to “citizen science." It involves nearly 1 million students and educators in a continental effort to track the seasonal migratory patterns of North American wildlife. Program founder and director Elizabeth Howard relays the inspiring details. Click here for a selection of migration maps.
Honeybee Catastrophe

When you eat a vegetable or piece of fruit, chances are there is a honeybee to thank for the opportunity. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 25 percent of our diet is the result of pollination by the insect. The recent discovery of a rapid and widespread decline of America’s honeybee populations has scientists and beekeepers mystified and very concerned. We get a sense of the severity from Bret Adee, co-owner of Adee Honey Farms, the nation’s largest honey farm, and from Jeff Pettis, head of the USDA’s bee research lab.

The Children Of Dr. Dolittle

John Dolittle was a fictional character with a slightly unbelievable ability to talk with animals in Hugh Lofting’s series of children’s books of the 1920s. In 2013, scientists are discovering real world evidence of sophisticated communication and even language among a vast array of wildlife species, which greatly expands the possibilities of actual human to non-human discourse. We have a conversation with an assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Daniel Wesson, who recently discovered that rodents talk to each other via sniffing. Also, Dr.
