Marietta, Ohio was the first town in the Northwest Territories to be settled by pioneers in 1788.

In his latest work, Pulitzer Prize winning historian David McCullough tells the story of the small group of colonist who settled the Northwest territory – the vast stretch of land that would become Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin.

These colonists, who traveled from New England, sought to spread American ideals of education, religious freedom and the prohibition on slavery.

McCullough says the country has much to learn right now from their values and sense of purpose.
